How People Are Buying Cars in 2017 Infographic

June 16, 2017    Auto News

Buying a car has traditionally always consisted of getting a copy of the Saturday paper and heading to all the local dealerships for test drives and negotiations. In 2017, online channels have provided consumers access to more information than ever before. Consumers can now research, shop, apply for a car finance and in some cases even purchase their vehicle online. This ‘How People Are Buying Cars’ infographic was designed to shed some light into consumer behaviour.

Take advantage of all the information that’s accessible to you – other consumers are!

Consumers increasingly rely on digital, and especially mobile, to help with their car buying journey—to research, find deals, and get real-time auto advice.

  • 95% of vehicle shoppers use digital channels to research.
  • 61% of vehicle shoppers research with online video.
  • Shoppers use 24 research touch points on average, when buying a car.

You can use digital channels to do more than just research

Consumers increasingly rely on digital, and especially mobile, to help with their car buying journey—to research, find deals, and get real-time auto advice.

  • Nearly two-thirds (62%) are initiating the car-buying process online, including consulting social media channels and car buying websites, before entering a dealership.
  • 75% of people asked, said that if given the opportunity, they would consider making their entire car-buying process online, including the vehicle financing, price negotiation, back office paperwork and home delivery.
  • 69% said they have either bought a car online or would consider doing so.
  • Nearly 72%, want to complete the credit application and financing paperwork online.

Consumers are reaching to their social circles for advice and affirmation

Customers endorse products to their friends/relatives. Surprisingly, they seem to even recommend products that they did not buy. This suggests the importance of the lost customers – both from their enthusiasm to endorse products and also from the fact that the word-of-mouth is an important influencer in the buying process.

  • Studies reveal that there is a 43% probability that a consumer will search for a local dealer on Facebook using Facebook’s new Graph Search.
  • The study revealed 67% of car buyers search for local business using mobile devices with 41% having “checked-in” to a local business using their mobile device.
  • There is a 59% probability that a consumer will trust a review from a Facebook friend more than reviews on other sites.
  • 38% of consumers report they’ll consult social media next time they purchase a car.
