8 Great Day Trips From Winnipeg

Spirit Sands in Spruce Woods Provincial Park

Distance: 2 hours from Winnipeg.

This site is known as one of Manitoba’s “special places” – a natural delta created by the Assiniboine River more than 15,000 years ago. Today, the location is home to a rich ecosystem of plants and wildlife, along with a stunning desert-like stretch of beautiful, wind-patterned sand. It’s a prime spot for a semi-challenging hike, and provides an out-of-this world backdrop for any photos you might want to take along the way. Be sure to check out “The Devil’s Punchbowl”, a small body of shimmering blue-green water that has occurred naturally in the landscape.

You won’t find many dining options in the Spruce Woods area, so make sure you pack a picnic lunch (or at least a few trail snacks) for the trip. For inspiration, check out our list of road-trip friendly foods.

Gimli

Distance: 1 hour and 10 minutes from Winnipeg.

Sometimes you just have to do what the Vikings did—that is, head up to Gimli and spend the day exploring. Originally settled by Icelandic immigrants in the 1800s, this lakeside community is bursting with history, scenery, and small-town charm (and also happens to be the home of Canada’s own Crown Royal Distillery). If you’re looking to learn, the New Iceland Heritage Museum offers a lot of interesting info for an affordable admittance fee. In the summer, don’t miss the Icelandic Festival and the Gimli Film Fest (where else can you sit on the beach and watch classic films projected onto a giant screen floating in the water?). Souvenir hunters are sure to find something original at Arnes Farmers Market or the famous curiosity-filled H.P. Tergesen’s General Store.

Hungry for some local fare? Brennevin’s Pizza is a teensy space packed to the brim with hungry tourists and lots of flavour. And of course, no visit to Gimli is complete without a photo op in front of their iconic Viking statue. Make time to stroll along the picturesque harbour, where fishing boats bob gently in the water, adding to the town’s charming maritime atmosphere.

Patricia Beach

Distance: 1 hour and 10 minutes from Winnipeg.

There’s nothing like a beautiful day at the beach, but the experience can often be soured by packed parking spaces, huge crowds, long lines for bathrooms and food, and the general noise of summertime revellers. Instead of heading for one of the more popular Winnipeg-adjacent beaches, give your agoraphobia a break and plan to visit Patricia Beach. This spot is just as stunningly beautiful as the much-busier Grand Beach, but here you’re much more likely to find a secluded spot to stretch out your towel and dig your feet into the sand. (You’ll also be able to feel TRULY at ease, if you’re into that – certain parts of the beach are clothing-optional.)

Bring along a cooler, a radio, your favourite trashy novel, and you’re set for a day of maxing and relaxing. Don’t forget to bring a handful of cash for the hamburger shack – their fare is delicious, and you likely won’t have to wait more than a few minutes to order.

Grand Beach

Distance: 1 hour from Winnipeg.

Renowned as one of the top beaches in Canada, Grand Beach is the perfect destination for those looking to relax by the water. This gorgeous spot on the eastern shore of Lake Winnipeg boasts soft, white sand and crystal-clear waters, making it ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and beach volleyball. The beach also features a boardwalk filled with quaint shops and food vendors, where you can grab a refreshing ice cream or snack.

For nature enthusiasts, Grand Beach offers hiking trails that wind through sand dunes and forested areas, providing breathtaking views of the lake. Plan to arrive early, especially during the summer months, as this popular destination tends to fill up quickly. If you’re a fan of birdwatching, bring along your binoculars—Grand Beach is a favourite spot for spotting rare bird species during migration season!

Birds Hill Park

Distance: 40 minutes from Winnipeg.

Boasting beautiful hiking trails and unspoiled nature, Birds Hill is a lot more than just the famous location of the Winnipeg Folk Fest. Bring the entire family or an outdoorsy date, for a day of fresh air and fun at Birds Hill, where you can take a hike, try horseback riding, or hit up the beach. The aptly named provincial park is also a great place to spend a quiet afternoon birdwatching. Bring some birdseed with you, and if you’re extra patient you might even get a little feathered friend to eat from the palm of your hand.

Cap off a great day at Birds Hill with a visit to the nearby Half Moon Drive-In. This retro-themed eatery is adored for its delicious hot dogs, shakes, and a huge menu of other classic diner delicacies. Consider renting a bike for the day to explore the park’s extensive trails, which are suitable for both beginners and seasoned cyclists.

Hecla Island

Distance: 2 hours from Winnipeg.

Nestled within Hecla-Grindstone Provincial Park, Hecla Island offers a tranquil retreat surrounded by natural beauty. With its pristine beaches, scenic hiking trails, and charming lighthouse, this island is a dream destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Don’t miss the Hecla Village, where you can learn about the area’s Icelandic history and culture.

For those who enjoy fishing, Hecla is a hotspot for reeling in Walleye and Northern Pike. If relaxation is more your speed, unwind at the luxurious Lakeview Hecla Resort, which features a spa, golf course, and fine dining options. During the winter months, Hecla transforms into a winter wonderland, offering cross-country skiing and snowshoeing opportunities for visitors who love cold-weather adventures.

10 Acre Woods

Distance: 1 hour from Winnipeg.

Perfect for families, 10 Acre Woods is a delightful petting farm and animal sanctuary where visitors can meet a variety of friendly animals. From goats and llamas to rabbits and pigs, this farm provides a hands-on experience that’s both fun and educational for kids and adults alike.

In addition to interacting with the animals, visitors can explore the walking trails, enjoy a picnic, or browse the gift shop for locally made goods. Seasonal events, such as pumpkin patches in the fall, add to the charm of this unique destination. Don’t forget to bring a camera to capture memorable moments with the adorable animals, and check its website for special events like farm-to-table dinners.

Whiteshell Provincial Park

Distance: 1.5 to 2 hours from Winnipeg.

Adventure awaits at Whiteshell Provincial Park, a sprawling natural haven filled with lakes, forests, and rocky outcrops. Whether you’re into hiking, canoeing, or fishing, there’s something for everyone at Whiteshell. Popular spots include the breathtaking views at Hunt Lake Trail and the serene waters of West Hawk Lake, which was formed by a meteor impact.

Camping is a popular activity here, with numerous sites available for tents and RVs. If you’re planning a day trip, pack a lunch and enjoy a picnic at one of the park’s many scenic spots. During the winter, Whiteshell becomes a paradise for snowmobilers and ice fishers, making it a year-round destination worth visiting.

Trappist Monastery Provincial Heritage Park

Distance: 25 minutes from Winnipeg.

Located on the outskirts of the city, Trappist Monastery Provincial Heritage Park is a serene and historic site that’s perfect for a quick getaway. The park is home to the picturesque ruins of a monastery built in the early 1900s. Wander through the grounds, take in the peaceful surroundings, and snap some stunning photos of the stone arches and remnants of the structure.

This park is a favourite for photographers and history buffs alike. It’s also a great spot for a quiet walk or a reflective moment in nature, making it an excellent addition to any day trip itinerary. If you’re visiting during the warmer months, consider packing a sketchpad or journal to capture the beauty and tranquility of this hidden gem.
